By the end of the 19th century, a staggering number of more than 9,000 windmills adorned the Dutch landscape. Many of them were erected to drain coastalmaritime depressions, known as polders, which were filled with fields of tulips stretching to the horizon. The flower, which had bankrupted many a speculative daredevil a few centuries earlier, became a quintessential feature of Dutch landscapes, and their symbol the famous Bloemen Route, or Flower Route.
 

Windmills is a game in which you erect windmills and plant tulips, but what does that mean in practice? If you build your engine well, using a novel system of selecting actions on the windmill wheels, the game will open its gates for you with each turn. Each successive turn will become more and more interesting and rewarding, and the elements of your machines will mesh not only literally, but figuratively as well.
